The centre-back put pen to paper on a new deal that runs to June 2023, silencing rumours of a move to Chelsea.

“It is truly an important day and I am very happy. It was what I wanted and what I work for every day,” Rugani told JTV.

“The most important thing is that the club wanted to do this.”

He has struggled somewhat for playing time in Turin since his arrival in the summer of 2015 from Empoli, managing 81 appearances and seven goals.

“I remember my debut, coming on against Sevilla in the final minutes. We won that night and I preserve a special place in my heart for that memory.

“The Coppa Italia debut was also tough, straight away into a Derby that we won 4-0 in front of our home fans. It was a great way to break the ice.

“My first Serie A game for Juventus was against Carpi, the last match ahead of the Winter break. We had a rough start, but were getting back on track and we just about brought home the points in a strange encounter.

“The goal I remember with fondness was against Cagliari in Turin, my first game in the second season at Juve. I broke the deadlock and, as it was my first goal, the entire team really celebrated with me. It’s extra satisfying for a defender to score a goal, because it’s not our job. What makes us really happy is a block or a great tackle.”

Rugani does not hold back when asked about the next ambition he wishes to achieve.

“There’s no point hiding, we want to go back to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, where we played a few weeks ago, and lift the Champions League trophy. That is our biggest dream, without doubt.”
