Juventus defender Daniele Rugani says “we have to do a mea culpa and learn the lessons” after the defeat to Young Boys last night.

The Bianconeri were beaten 2-1 by the Swiss champions in Bern, only securing top spot in their Champions League group because Manchester United also lost to Valencia.

“We have to do a mea culpa and learn the lessons from this match,” Rugani told reporters after the game.

“There will be a lot of games over the season which will be easy on paper, but you start at 0-0 on the pitch and you have to earn a win in any match.

“Today wasn’t the Juve we’ve seen since the start of the year. We need to give credit to Young Boys who played a good match, honouring the group in the best way, but we need to think about ourselves.

“I repeat, we need to do a mea culpa because we weren’t the Juventus we’ve shown ourselves to be, but there’s always a lesson to be taken from a bad performance.

“We have a lot of challenges, lots of objectives to achieve, and this can do us good.”

Rugani hasn’t played much this season, and it has been suggested he may leave the club.

“I was raised that way, I train hard and always do my best, talking little and proving things with facts.

“That’s my philosophy in life and in football, and I go forward for my team. The Coach makes his choices, I respect them all, I’m a professional.

“Of course, every player wants to play more, there’s no doubt about that, but this is the way I was raised and educated.

“I feel attached to this shirt because I know I deserve it, I know the player I am and I think I’ve shown it over the years.

“Those who want to see that see it, those who don’t want to don’t. It doesn’t interest me.”
