“This is my first year at Roma and training with him is a huge honour,” Rüdiger told Sky.

“I’ve seen lots of videos, and because of his performances he’s become a legend. It’s a bit sad to think that this could be his last derby, but life goes on.”

The defender then looked forward to the match itself, and is under no illusions about the importance of the Derby della Capitale.

“Above all it’s the Romans who have told me many things, [Daniele] De Rossi made me realise how important this game is for the fans.

“Miroslav Klose? He’s scored so many goals, for the [German] national team too, but it won’t be a duel between me and him, I’ll also be aware of other players like [Antonio] Candreva and Felipe Anderson.”
