Giuseppe Rossi is hoping to emulate Francesco Totti’s achievement of fighting back from injury to win an international competition with Italy.

The Villarreal and Azzurri striker is currently recovering from knee surgery with Euro 2012 on the horizon.

“I dream that the European Championship can end for me in the same way that Totti’s World Cup 2006 did,” noted the forward.

“Italy boss Cesare Prandelli knows what I can give to the team and what I can do on the pitch. I would like to give my contribution in this competition.”

Rossi and Milan’s Antonio Cassano had emerged as Prandelli’s favoured strike-force before the American-born player ruptured knee ligaments in the autumn.

“I should be back on the field of play in April,” he added. “I would like to play a few games with consistency before being at the disposal of Prandelli.”

Spain will start the competition as favourites, but Rossi insists that they won’t necessarily be picking up more silverware in Poland and Ukraine.

“It’s not easy to win a long tournament such as a European Championship or a World Cup. They are tough events even for the best prepared sides.

“Prandelli hasn’t asked me anything about Spain yet, there is still plenty of time to go, two months…”

Italy will have to face Spain, Croatia and the Republic of Ireland in the group stages.
