Cristian Romero admits it was his decision to join Tottenham from Atalanta last summer: ‘It’s a big club playing in the best league in the world.’

The Argentinean centre-back moved to North London on a permanent €50m deal plus €7m add-ons.

A former Genoa and Juventus defender, Romero spent just one season at Atalanta before joining Tottenham.

The 23-year-old explained his decision to leave Bergamo in an interview with Sky Sports UK.

“Gio [Lo Celso] has helped me to settle in and I like having him as a team-mate for both club and country,” Romero said.

“He’s a very good friend and clearly it helps having people like him here as we play together for Argentina.

“But he didn’t influence my decision to join. It was fully my decision to come to Tottenham as it’s a big club playing in the best league in the world.”

Romero was named best Serie A defender for 2020-21.

Atalanta signed Matteo Lovato and Merih Demiral to replace the 23-year-old who had made his Serie A debut with Genoa in 2018.

Romero played 88 games in Italy’s top flight, scoring three goals.

Tottenham director Fabio Paratici signed him twice in one year.

The first time at Juventus in 2020, but Romero remained at the club only for a few weeks before joining Atalanta.

One year later, he signed with the North London club, where Paratici had moved after his 11-year spell in Turin.

3 thought on “Romero on why he left Atalanta for Tottenham”
  1. Pity to see the best young players not wanting to stay in Serie A anymore. It’s become a feeder league to the rich epl. And joining Spurs of all clubs is a real shame.

  2. Wait a couple of years, then Tottenham will be shown what it’s worth
