“The lads really want to win this game, also so they can dedicate it to Castan,” director Baldissoni told Sky Sport Italia.

Brazilian defender Castan has been diagnosed with a cavernoma – an abnormal cluster of blood vessels in the brain that cause dizziness or worse – so will undergo microsurgery next week.

It is not clear when he’ll be able to play again, but reports suggest it won’t be before April.

“He is very relaxed and happy with all the affection he received. We had to wait for the swelling to subside and he’s been doing light training, but the medics told us the operation had become necessary.”

Will Roma therefore go on the transfer market to find a replacement in January?

“We’ll see what our fixture list looks like and also how Leo’s operation goes before making our evaluations. We will not be caught unprepared.”
