The clubs had to discuss extending the loan beyond June 30 due to the extended season and that conversation allowed them to get closer together in their positions.
It’s reported in Italy that Manchester United might even allow Roma to sign Smalling on another one-year loan, this time costing €4m rather than €3m, and negotiate a further purchase option at the end of that.
His contract with United runs to June 2022, so it would be financially viable to do that.
