Roma are stepping up their interest in Manchester United defender Eric Bailly, who was requested by coach Jose Mourinho.

The links have already been apparent over the last few days and Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio claims this evening that the negotiations are now progressing.

It was Mourinho on the Manchester United bench who encouraged the club to purchase Bailly from Villarreal for €38m in the summer of 2016.

He is still under contract until June 2024 with an option to extend for a further season.

Roma are hoping to get Bailly on loan with an option to buy, considering he is not part of Manchester United’s plans under Erik ten Hag and managed only seven competitive appearances last term.

The Ivory Coast international is 28 years of age and spent most of his career in Spain at Espanyol and Villarreal.

Bailly would be the second defender to join Roma from Manchester United after Chris Smalling.

  2. I trust Mourinho more than I trust Mohammed. If Jose thinks he can do the job, then he can do the job.
