Roma have made an offer to Ajax for Maarten Stekelenburg, but agreeing a fee is proving problematic.

Reports last night emerged that sporting director Walter Sabatini was in Amsterdam to discuss a possible move.

"I can confirm that there was a meeting between the two clubs," agent Robert Jansen told calciomercato.it.

"However, the negotiations have broken down. At the moment there is an important difference between the demand and the offer.

"We'll try to close the operation, but the negotiations are very complicated right now."

The Dutch international is in the last year of his contract at Ajax, hence the difference in valuation.

Roma are reportedly hoping to pay less than €8m, while the Dutch club are understood to be asking for more than €12m.

"There are no more meetings planned, but telephone conversations will continue," concluded Jansen.
