Brendan Rodgers has made clear that he does not think Pepe Reina will return to Liverpool next summer after his spell at Napoli.

The Spaniard is midway through a season-long loan at the San Paolo, but with his contract at Anfield not expiring until June 2016 and Napoli seen previously to be focusing on now-injured Rafael as No 1 for next term, uncertainty surrounds his future.

However, his parent side’s manager has communicated in no uncertain terms that he is unlikely to be staying with the Premier League club.

“He wrote a goodbye letter didn’t he?” began Rodgers to the Liverpool Echo today.

“Obviously Pepe made it very clear when he went to Napoli that he was looking to move because he penned a great big letter saying he was going to work with the best manager that he’d worked with [Rafael Benitez] and thanked him for his time for Liverpool.

“So, for me, it probably sounded like he’d made his decision there.”
