Several former Milan personalities, including Fabio Capello, believe the Rossoneri’s new stadium should be named after Silvio Berlusconi, but it could happen earlier in Monza, where the city council has already filed a motion.

Berlusconi died on Monday, June 12, 2023, in Milan and his funeral will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, June 14, at Milan’s Dome.

He was Monza’s President but also the most winning owner in Milan’s history. Berlusconi sold the Rossoneri in 2017 after 31 years at the helm.

Former Milan coach Fabio Capello told Gazzetta on Tuesday (page 21) that Milan’s new stadium should be named after their legendary President. The ex-Italian tactician said Berlusconi was even “bigger” than Real Madrid‘s Santiago Bernabeu.

“It was easier to emerge for Real Madrid in those years and Berlusconi didn’t use shareholders’ money, but his own,” he said.

Therefore, Milan should name their new stadium after Berlusconi.

“It would be a great idea, let’s see what the new owners think. I guess Milan fans wouldn’t be against it.”

Ex-Rossoneri director Umberto Gandini shares the same view: “I agree, there was a time when Berlusconi wanted to buy San Siro and name it after his father, Luigi Berlusconi,” he told Sky Sport.

“He admired Santiago Bernabeu, so I hope Milan’s new stadium will be named after Berlusconi.”

“It would be a great idea,” added another ex-Milan player, Filippo Galli, in an interview with Leggo.

Milan are still assessing the best area to build their new home and the latest reports suggest it could be erected in the area of San Donato.

Monza may be quicker as the city council has already filed a motion to change the name of the Stadio Brianteo and name it after Berlusconi, who bought the club in 2018, leading them to their first Serie A promotion in 2021-22.
