It was reported last night that the Zenit St Petersburg midfielder had been given permission to leave the Belgium camp and fly to Turin for medical tests.

Now La Stampa is reporting that the transfer was definitively completed overnight, with Witsel agreeing a five-year contract worth €4.5m per season.

The source is notable, as La Stampa is owned by the Agnelli family, which also controls Juventus.

Zenit had initially demanded €30m for Witsel, and had agreed a deal with Everton only for the player to reject it.

The newspaper reports that the Belgian’s desire to move to the Bianconeri was key in lowering the cost, as he’d simply have moved on a free transfer when his contract expired in 2017.

Witsel therefore pushed the Russian club to accept an offer from the Old Lady, with Zenit eventually agreeing to €18m plus another €2m in bonuses, rather than losing him for free.
