Inter have been in pole position for the Italy international for months now, with most sources confident Barella would only choose the Nerazzurri.

However, the ongoing negotiations have failed to find a breakthrough between the two clubs and Roma stepped in.

It’s reported the Sardinians have accepted the Giallorossi proposal of €35m cash plus ownership of forward Defrel, who spent this season on loan at Sampdoria.

Barella now has to agree personal terms with Roma, but it is possible he could stall long enough for Inter to relaunch their own bid.

The asking price has always been €50m, but so far clubs have only been prepared to offer cash plus a player exchange and Cagliari are being extremely picky.
