Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis is reportedly planning for a future with Gennaro Gattuso at the helm and could extend his current deal at the San Paolo.

Calciomercato.com reports that Aurelio De Laurentiis thinks the former Milan coach is the right man to lead the Partenopei project, after Gattuso replaced Carlo Ancelotti at the helm in December.

Gattuso signed a deal until June 2021 when he was appointed last year, but the report claims the former midfielder has convinced the board to extend his current deal immediately and give him peace to work on a long-term plan to get Napoli back among the contenders in Italy.

The outlet writes that De Laurentiis met with sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli before the forced break due to the coronavirus emergency in Italy and had underlined his intentions to keep Gattuso at the helm in Naples.

The health crisis in the country has obviously slowed down the development at the Azzurri, but before the break they were preparing to face Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League and are 1-0 up against Inter after the first leg of the semi-finals in the Coppa Italia.

Napoli have climbed to sixth in Serie A under Gattuso and are currently nine points behind Atalanta at fourth sit three points above his former employer Milan at seventh.
