The duel between the two goalkeepers kept them both on their toes in the initial phase of the season, but from February on it seemed like the new Partenopei coach Gattuso has made his mind up, as Ospina gradually claimed the gloves.

Gattuso’s choice has, according to Calciomercato.com, been accepted by President Aurelio De Laurentiis, despite having splashed €25m on Meret two years ago, but for the player it could hamper his chances of a place in the Italy squad for Euro 2020 next summer.

The postponement of the competition has given the young goalkeeper a chance to look for a starting position elsewhere, if Napoli can’t guarantee minutes.

The outlet writes that the 23-year-old, who arrived from Udinese in July 2018, will discuss his future with sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli and De Laurentiis.
