Referee’s Association chief Andrea Gervasoni confirms the Inter winner against Verona should’ve been disallowed and it was ‘an error’ for VAR not to intervene.

Speaking to DAZN this evening on their weekly Open VAR slot, assistant designator Gervasoni confessed it had been a poor weekend for officiating in Serie A.

“We are not very satisfied,” he said.

Although the audio from that weekend cannot be released until it has been fully analysed, Gervasoni did admit their evaluation of the incident in Inter’s 2-1 win over Verona was an easy one to discuss.

“We will analyse it calmly, because we have to understand why there was no intervention. It was an error, that goal absolutely should’ve been disallowed.

“We listened to the audio and will talk to the VAR Nasca. We need to understand if he judged it to be a bodycheck, whereas Bastoni intentionally strikes the opposition player.”

There have been a few big howlers from VAR this season and the other also involved Luigi Nasca, who was in the booth when he did not intervene over a clear Samuel Iling Junior foul on Cyril Ngonge during the 1-1 draw between Juventus and Bologna.

This has prompted reports Nasca will be suspended from Serie A duty and demoted to Serie B for a few weeks.

It is also the second incident involving Inter and a decisive goal in as many weeks, because Yann Bisseck seemed to push Kevin Strootman in the build-up to their goal in that 1-1 draw.

Gervasoni also confirmed that this weekend it was “an error” to disallow Sassuolo’s goal against Fiorentina for Matheus Henrique’s offside position, as he was not interfering with play.
