The Azzurri scored the winner through a Lorenzo Insigne spot-kick in the first half of Napoli-Juve on Sunday.

Chiellini jumped with his arm on Amir Rrahmani’s face and VAR did consider it a foul, as did the referee following his on-field review.

Andrea Pirlo complained at the end of the game saying: “If you give a penalty for that, then any contact will be punishable by a spot-kick. If that had been given for us, there would’ve been a lot of controversy and complaints, assuming it’d be given to us at all.”

However, Italian sports papers wrote Doveri’s decision was correct.

“It was difficult to spot Chiellini’s foul live, but the referee had no doubts once he had an on-field review,” wrote La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Doesn’t matter if he did it on purpose or not, Chiellini hit Rrahmani and the penalty call was correct,” according to Il Corriere dello Sport.

Pirlo did also protest because Doveri didn’t show Giovanni Di Lorenzo a second yellow card for a foul on Federico Chiesa, but the papers wrote it was a correct decision too.

According to Tuttosport, Di Lorenzo could have been sent off for that foul.

Doveri was rated 6.5 by La Gazzetta dello Sport and Il Corriere dello Sport and 6 by Tuttosport.
