Mourinho is apparently unconvinced by Sami Khedira and Lassana Diarra, not to mention Fernando Gago, and would like to bring more creativity, dynamism and heart to his midfield.

Real Madrid are also interested in Bastian Schweinsteiger and Cesc Fabregas, but it would appear De Rossi is their No 1 target.

The World Cup winner would cost €25m and Real Madrid hope to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding Roma's ownership situation.
