It’s the first time the Merengues have lost three consecutive La Liga matches since May 2009, when it was five in a row.

Former Italy, Juventus and Chelsea boss Conte had been the hot favourite to take over and Italian media suggest a call will come through to his entourage over the next 24 hours.

Spanish station Onda Cero go beyond that and insist the announcement has already been planned for Monday at 12.00 GMT.

Conte is still under contract with Chelsea, but the Premier League club would be only too happy to resolve the situation without a lengthy legal battle.

He was fired to make way for Maurizio Sarri several days after pre-season training had already begun.

Conte led Juventus to three Serie A titles and Italy to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals, before guiding Chelsea to Premier League glory and the FA Cup.
