Inter’s Andrea Ranocchia has admitted that he was disappointed to be omitted from the Italy squad for the games against Bulgaria and Malta.

Cesare Prandelli has opened the international doors to the centre-back, but he was left out of his plans for the start of their World Cup qualifying campaign.

“I was disappointed, but it might have been a good thing right now because it allowed me to focus on training with my club side,” he told Tuttosport.

“An explanation? No, I’ve not heard from anyone. The Coach is not the kind of person who phones you up to give you reasons why you are not there.

“He makes his choices and I accept them without any problems.

“After all, if I continue playing at these levels then a return to the national squad will arrive as a consequence of that.”

Ranocchia is rediscovering his best form after enduring a 2011-12 season to forget. “It was a bad year, but I think that seasons like that help you to grow a lot.”
