Claudio Ranieri insists he liked his Sampdoria side and reveals why his return to the Stadio Olimpico wasn’t too special.

Roma beat Samp at the Stadio Olimpico through an Edin Dzeko goal.

“We tried to stop their players, we were supposed to hit them on counter attacks, sometimes we made it, sometimes not,” Ranieri told DAZN.

“Dzeko is a champion and we know it. We played a good game, but he is capable of scoring goals from nowhere and he once again did it.

“We tried to stop their players, we were supposed to hit them on counter attacks, sometimes we made it, sometimes not,” Ranieri told DAZN.

“Dzeko is a champion and we know it. We played a good game, but he is capable of scoring goals from nowhere and he once again did it.

“I liked our reaction, we took some risks, but we tried to score the equaliser, it means a lot to me. We made some mistakes, but Roma were focused and determined.”

The former Chelsea and Leicester coach returned to Roma to face one of his former clubs.

“No fans mean no football, but that’s what we need to do now. Without them it’s more difficult. The comeback was not as special, only fans can turn emotions on.”

Ranieri reveals he does not expect new signings in January.

“I only had [Fabio] Quagliarella and [Antonino] La Gumina available since the beginning of the season. Manolo Gabbiadini has been injured and the same is true of Keita Baldé. They are the kind of reinforcement I expect.

I don’t expect anything more from the transfer window. We don’t have to make important signings, we did it in August and I am happy like this.”
