Claudio Ranieri felt 'everything was going against' Sampdoria until a late goal to grab a vital point against Lecce on Wednesday.

The 1-1 draw was far from what they wanted in Genoa this week. The new coach admits that they are going through a tough period, but doesn’t want to take anything from Lecce’s performance on the road.

The 1-1 draw was far from what they wanted in Genoa this week. The new coach admits that they are going through a tough period, but doesn’t want to take anything from Lecce’s performance on the road.

“Everything is going against us at the moment,” said Ranieri after the loss. “Compliments to Lecce, who are on good form.

“All the crossing is not a symptom of confusion. In the first half we were playing with aggression, but Lecce are a team on a good run, and they have taken more points on the road. We expected a match of this kind.

“We started well, missing an opportunity with [Federico] Bonazzoli. They then scored from a rebound. Now everything is unfortunately going against us.

"I need to say one thing, though; during the last 30 minutes of the match we confused them by going wide. The goal in the stoppage time I take as a good omen.

“I need to thank the supporters, as they let themselves be heard all the way to the end. We are working to do more. It’s not easy to play after three days and I have tried to give confidence to the side, trying to take them out in the middle of the park.”

Ranieri gave particular praise to substitute Gaston Ramirez for his impact, as he grabbed the equaliser on Wednesday, and admits he has admired the player for long.

“I wanted him at Leicester, he knows the admiration I have for him,” added the 68-year-old. “I’ve watched him closely on the training ground and I brought him on in the second half. He gave us the lift we needed and got himself a goal.

“We will see if this is the point that turned our season around.”
