The Blucerchiati started the season on the wrong foot, beaten 3-0 in Turin by Dejan Kulusevski’s precise finish, Leonardo Bonucci and Cristiano Ronaldo goals in the second half.

“I am very disappointed, as I did not expect such a weak performance from my men,” the veteran told Sky Sport Italia.

“We can lose, but we have to fight! I see Juventus players come on with hunger, fighting for every ball and we do not. We can never win like that!

“In my view, the 3-0 result was frankly soft, because we could’ve conceded a lot more. We were timid, fearful, weak. I don’t know why this happened.

“I knew Juve would go between the lines, so I set the team out with five in midfield like last season. The difference was that last season, we pushed them high and pressed Juve. We didn’t do that this time.

“I want to know what team we are, the one we saw pre-COVID last season or post-COVID. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Did Ranieri see many differences between Pirlo and Maurizio Sarri’s Juventus teams?

“It’s very early. They want to spread you out with the wide players, so if you don’t press them well, they will create problems. Sarri was more of a vertical movement, they passed going forwards more than to the side. We lost against both anyway…”

Keita Balde Diao is expected to arrive next week from Monaco as a Sampdoria reinforcement.

“We’ll see what shape he’s in, he can play wide in a 4-4-2 or as a striker.”
