Sampdoria’s meeting with Claudio Ranieri was reportedly very positive and he is close to agreeing a deal worth €1m plus bonuses.

It means for the second time in only a few months, Ranieri will be replacing Eusebio Di Francesco, having taken over as caretaker manager at Roma in March.

He was by no means first choice for Samp, who were turned down by Stefano Pioli and Gennaro Gattuso, while the club was unconvinced by Beppe Iachini and Gianni De Biasi.

According to multiple sources including La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sky Sport Italia and TMW, this evening’s encounter with Ranieri was positive and significant steps forward were made in reaching an agreement.

It’s believed he has been offered a contract to the end of the season worth €1m plus bonuses, with automatic renewal for another season if Samp avoid relegation.

They are currently propping up the table after six defeats in the opening seven rounds, which prompted Di Francesco to part company with Sampdoria by mutual consent.
