Rafael Leao and his entourage continue to negotiate with Milan over a new contract and after seemingly agreeing on the salary, the latest sticking point is the release clause.

His current deal is due to expire in June 2024 and it is increasingly likely that he will pen a new long-term contract at San Siro.

The two parties seem very close to agreeing on the wage increase that will reach €6m per season plus performance-related bonuses.

However, Tuttomercatoweb claim the latest contentious element in the talks is around the release clause, which would make it easier for Premier League clubs to swoop for him in future.

The current release clause stands at €150m and is valid only for a few weeks during the summer and it is reported Leao’s agent wants that lowered to a far more manageable €80m.

That is not something Milan are prepared to accept, as it would essentially be putting him on the market for less than his current transfer value.

For clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City, €80m for a player like the Portugal international would be considered a bargain.

Milan would indeed prefer to remove the release clause completely.

  1. Either remove it or increase it. Leao will be a much better player when Milan finally signs a similarity capable right winger and a working attacking midfielder.

If all fails, at least leave it intact at 150m.

  2. They’d better put a start date on that release clause like City did with Haaland or else the PL will throw that money on the table immediately

  3. OK no to that 80m release clause. If they insist then sell him ASAP for 100m. No point waiting to forcefully accept 80m.
