Fabio Quagliarella is ready to stay at Sampdoria after Andrea Radrizzani’s takeover and thanks Napoli fans: ‘I had promised myself I wouldn’t cry today.’

The striker’s contract at Marassi expires in the summer, but Quagliarella is ready to remain at the club in 2023-24 when the Blucerchiati will play in Serie B.

“The most important thing about this week is that Sampdoria are safe,” the 40-year-old told DAZN at half time of Samp’s away game at Napoli on Sunday.

“That was a miracle, that is what matters. After that, the project will be planned out. As I said, I feel good and am at their disposal, the club will then decide.”

Napoli ultras moved the striker to tears during the warm-up, putting up a banner that read: ‘Proud son of Partenope, from a troubled past to glorious present, your sweat-soaked our jersey, you will never be forgotten by your people. Grazie, Fabio!’

“Sorry that people have seen me do nothing but cry for the last week,” said Quagliarella.

“I had promised myself I wouldn’t cry today, but seeing the fans, the stadium like this, the banner, I honestly didn’t expect it. I apologise, I don’t want to cry all the time, I was even struggling during the warm-up.”
