The Blucerchiati are coming off a spectacular 5-3 victory over Sassuolo and veteran hitman Quagliarella is only growing more confident.

He is currently the Serie A Capocannoniere on 21 goals and this week became the oldest ever Italy scorer, aged 36 years and 54 days, finding the net in a 6-0 win against Liechtenstein.

Gianluca Caprari, Albin Ekdal, Ronaldo Vieira and Edgar Barreto are injured, but Coach Marco Giampaolo has several options open to him.

Gregoire Defrel and Manolo Gabbiadini are fighting for the role alongside Quagliarella, with Gaston Ramirez the favourite ahead of ex-Milan man Riccardo Saponara in the trequartista slot.

Jacopo Sala and Bartosz Bereszynski represent another doubt at right-back, while Jakub Jankto could get a rare start.

Milan’s only remaining absentee is Jack Bonaventura, but Gennaro Gattuso is expected to rest Lucas Paqueta and drop Franck Kessie, as the Ivorian was fined for his unseemly touchline row with teammate Lucas Biglia during the Milan Derby.

It is Biglia who takes Kessie’s place in the middle of the park, joined by Hakan Calhanoglu in a deeper role.

This allows on-form Samu Castillejo to complete the trident attack with Suso and Capocannoniere candidate Piatek.

Between Genoa and Milan, Poland international Piatek has scored 19 Serie A goals this season, on a par with Cristiano Ronaldo and only two shy of Quagliarella.

Probable line-ups

Sampdoria (4-3-1-2): Audero; Sala, Colley, Andersen, Murru; Linetty, Praet, Jankto; Ramirez; Gabbiadini, Quagliarella

Milan (4-3-3): G Donnarumma; Calabria, Musacchio, Romagnoli, Rodriguez; Bakayoko, Biglia, Calhanoglu; Suso, Piatek, Castillejo
