The Giallorossi have a huge injury crisis to deal with, ruling out Lorenzo Pellegrini, Bryan Cristante, Amadou Diawara, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Cengiz Under, Nikola Kalinic, Davide Zappacosta and suspended Justin Kluivert.

Javier Pastore is struggling with fitness issues too, so it remains to be seen if he will be in the starting XI as a trequartista behind Edin Dzeko.

If the Argentine does play, then captain Florenzi should be re-routed to right-back.

There is another alternative, which is to place Nicolò Zaniolo in that role, which would move Florenzi to the right side of the supporting trio behind the striker.

In that case, Leonardo Spinazzola would be the right-back, and we could also see Diego Perotti getting his first start of the season.

Defender Gianluca Mancini had a successful experiment as a midfielder in Thursday’s 1-1 Europa League draw with Borussia Monchengladbach and should be confirmed alongside Jordan Veretout.

Milan were held to a 2-2 draw with Lecce on new coach Stefano Pioli’s debut and he adopted a 4-3-3 formation with Rafael Leao flanked by Suso and Hakan Calhanoglu.

Despite the fact Piatek scored off the bench, it’s reported the trident will remain intact, which again means no room for Ante Rebic.

Samu Castillejo and Davide Calabria are back in the squad after suspension, though Ricardo Rodriguez joins Giacomo Bonaventura on the treatment table.

Despite his return, Calabria could be benched, as Pioli is tempted to use the same starting XI that drew with Lecce.

Probable line-ups

Roma (4-2-3-1): Pau Lopez; Florenzi, Fazio, Smalling, Kolarov; Veretout, Mancini; Zaniolo, Pastore, Perotti; Dzeko

Milan (4-3-3): G Donnarumma; Conti, Musacchio, Romagnoli, Theo Hernandez; Paqueta, Biglia, Kessie; Suso, Leao, Calhanoglu
