It means the 35-year-old will require surgery and could be out for at least four to six months.

De Ligt therefore gets his chance to make the Serie A debut, having been left on the bench for last week’s season opener at Parma.

That is expected to be the only change in the starting XI, as again Juve rely on the old guard, including Blaise Matuidi, Sami Khedira and Gonzalo Higuain.

Paulo Dybala should therefore once more be left on the bench with Adrien Rabiot and Danilo.

Maurizio Sarri is not expected on the touchline, as he is still struggling with pneumonia and, despite reportedly wanting to be there against his old club, it was considered unwise by the Juventus medical staff.

Napoli make the trip without injured Arkadiusz Milik, although Fernando Llorente should sign on as a free agent today, so the only real option in attack is Dries Mertens.

He should again be supported by Lorenzo Insigne, Fabian Ruiz and Jose Callejon.

After the 4-3 victory away to Fiorentina, Carlo Ancelotti is eager to get the defence sorted out and this is where changes are expected.

Nikola Maksimovic represents a more defensive approach than summer signing Giovanni Di Lorenzo, while Faouzi Ghoulam could get the nod rather than Mario Rui.

Kostas Manolas and Kalidou Koulibaly form the new centre-back partnership.

Probable line-ups

Juventus (4-3-3): Szczesny; De Sciglio, Bonucci, de Ligt, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi; Douglas Costa, Higuain, Cristiano Ronaldo

Napoli (4-2-3-1): Meret; Maksimovic, Manolas, Koulibaly, Ghoulam; Allan, Zielinski; Callejon, Fabian Ruiz, Insigne; Mertens
