Genoa President Enrico Preziosi is confident both the Grifone and local rivals Sampdoria will secure their Serie A status, even if the FIGC ‘rejects’ an attempt to block relegation.

Out of 20 Serie A clubs, 16 voted in favour of freezing promotion and relegation if the 2019-20 season is forced to end early due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I expect our request will be rejected by the FIGC, who after all have enough autonomy to not take this into consideration,” Preziosi told Radio Rai.

“I expect our request will be rejected by the FIGC, who after all have enough autonomy to not take this into consideration,” Preziosi told Radio Rai.

“We made a proposal, a suggestion, rather than a demand. We know that we’ll ultimately have to respect the decision made by the Federation.”

It has been pointed out that many of the clubs calling for the block are those at risk of relegation, including the two Marassi sides.

“It’s true that the numbers say we are both in danger, but considering the squads available to Genoa and Sampdoria, I am very calm. I think we’ll both bring home our Serie A safety.

“The results achieved just before the lockdown were comforting and we do not fear relegation.”
