In the face of returning transfer speculation, Enrico Preziosi is confident that Rodrigo Palacio will be happy to stay with Genoa ‘for a long time.’

Palacio was heavily linked with Inter last summer and although a move did not come to fruition, the anticipation is that the Argentine will attract similar attention next summer.

The 30-year-old former Boca Juniors striker has scored 14 goals and assisted a further four already this season, from just 21 appearances. Speaking this week on simmering speculation about a future move as a result, club President Preziosi only sees one possibility for Palacio.

“Last summer, [Miguel] Veloso came to me and said: ‘President, I want to stay in Genoa’. And indeed he has. The same desire was expressed by Palacio and he has also remained.

“Not only that, but I also improved his contract to a figure that is normally out of reach at Genoa. He is costing us €2m a season and he can earn even more if, as we all hope, he scores more goals.

“I, like all Genoa’s fans, remain convinced that he will remain with us for a long time. But, it only depends on him – he must be happy to stay at Genoa, because I have never kept a reluctant player.”

Preziosi also passed comment on the weekend test for Palacio and his teammates – the visit of Juventus to Marassi.

“They are definitely a great team and [Antonio] Conte is doing a great job, but I do not hope for a draw.

“I’m sure we’ll have a great game, I would like to see the same Genoa that defeated Napoli, Lazio and Udinese.

“We have to play positively, because we have nothing to fear.”
