Genoa Coach Cesare Prandelli refused to confirm Antonio Sanabria wasn’t meant to take his last-gasp saved penalty against Roma. “You can miss a penalty.”

The Rossoblu equalised at the 90th minute through Cristian Romero and could’ve won at the 96th, but Antonio Mirante parried Sanabria’s spot-kick.

That 1-1 draw left them in 16th position on 36 points, just four ahead of Empoli in the last remaining relegation spot.

That 1-1 draw left them in 16th position on 36 points, just four ahead of Empoli in the last remaining relegation spot.

When talking to Sky Sport Italia after the match, the tactician was asked why the Paraguayan striker took the spot-kick and not captain Domenico Criscito.

“Sometimes you can miss a penalty. If Sanabria decided to take it, there must have been an agreement between the players,” shrugged Prandelli.

“Criscito is the designated penalty taker, but whoever feels confident of scoring can step up to take one.

“It was a good performance today and we played a great game. The players have been putting the effort in training for months and today they put everything they had into the game.

“The team is solid and we will do our best in the last three rounds. Christian Kouame has the enthusiasm and desire to grow, but he must be more clinical in the penalty area.”

Genoa felt more like the away team until the equaliser, because the ultras are on strike in protest at the club hierarchy.

“Today the fans were amazing, and I want to thank those that came to the stadium, we could definitely feel their support.”
