“There is a real desire to start strong and immediately put things on the right track,” Napoli winger Politano told RAI Sport.

“We know it will be very difficult, but we are eager to get points on the board.”

The Azzurri are in the same EURO 2024 qualifying group as England, Malta, North Macedonia and Ukraine.

There is a debut for striker Retegui, who was born in Argentina and plays currently for Tigre, but his family hails from Italy.

“Hopefully he can have a great game, he is a lad with great prospects and we all need to just make it simple for him.”

Italy are defending their European Championship title, having beaten England on penalties at Wembley Stadium to lift the EURO 2020 trophy in July 2021.
