Stefano Pioli felt Fiorentina “held out under pressure when we needed to and struck at the right time” in a 2-0 Coppa Italia win at Torino.

Federico Chiesa struck twice late on to finalise counter-attacks and set up a quarter-final clash with Roma or Virtus Entella.

“Chiesa made an important contribution, but the whole team was tenacious against a tough opponent,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“The state of the pitch didn’t help either side, but I told the lads at half-time it could be decided on a single incident and it proved to be the case.

“We suffered a little in the second half, but mainly on set plays, while we created chances too. It was a very physical match and in that area Torino are stronger than we are, so it was a great result.

“We held out under pressure when we needed to and then struck at the right time.”

Luis Muriel made his debut in the starting XI, but Giovanni Simeone came off the bench and made an immediate impact with the opening assist.

“It was not an easy game for any of our forwards, especially Muriel, as the spaces were limited. We can experiment several situations in attack to make the most of our characteristics and the weaknesses of the opponent.

“I have many attacking players at my disposal, Luis can play in a variety of roles and the important thing will be for the team to have the right attitude. I like to shake things up tactically and make us unpredictable for the opposition, so we welcome a versatile figure like Muriel.

“Clearly, we are not satisfied with our current position in the Serie A table and should’ve done better in the first half of the season. Now we need to do much better and make up for lost ground, as the push for the top six is very tight with many competitive teams.”
