Milan coach Stefano Pioli will likely stick with the four-man defence as opposed to reverting to a back five when Milan host Empoli in Serie A on Friday evening.

The Rossoneri boss shuffled his pack and switched tactics for the first time in several months against Napoli on Sunday, which resulted in a 4-0 win over the runaway league leaders.

Pioli is now expected to go again with a back-four against the Tuscans on Friday, with a possible slight alteration to the personnel selected last time out in the league.

Full-backs Davide Calabria and the ever-present Theo Hernandez will likely retain their places in Milan’s starting line-up for this weekend’s fixtures, with Fikayo Tomori also expected to start again in central defence.

With Pierre Kalulu still absent with the injury he sustained during the international break, a decision remains to be made over the other starting centre-back.

Simon Kjaer played the full 90 minutes in the most recent league game, although Gazzetta dello Sport believes that the Dane could be rested in sight of the Champions League quarter-final against Napoli next week.

It is therefore expected that Malick Thiaw will come in to start against Empoli alongside Tomori in a two-man central defensive pairing.
