Milan coach Stefano Pioli has praised Theo Hernandez as ‘one of the best full-backs in Europe’ and said the French defender ‘deserves’ to play for France.

Theo has convinced coach Pioli at San Siro and has played 46 competitive games since his €20m move from Real Madrid in July 2019.

The left-back has contributed eight goals and seven assists in the process and Pioli hails the defender, adding that he works hard to improve further.

“He is one of the best full-backs in Europe,” Pioli told L’Equipe. “He has great physical and technical qualities.

“He can read the last pass well and has the potential to hurt his opponents on his own. He’s trying to improve every day and he’s doing it especially in the defensive phase.

“He’s a great full-back, I’m satisfied with what he’s doing but he can still improve.”

The 23-year-old has never played for France and Pioli believes he ‘deserves’ a place in Didier Deschamps squad.

“I’m surprised, but I don’t want to interfere in the decisions made by Deschamps,” Pioli added. “France have a lot of talents, but Theo deserves to be called up.

“He’s working to enter the national team.”
