The Viola will travel to Sardinia to face Cagliari next Friday, before a Coppa Italia meeting with Lazio on Boxing Day and a further League match with Milan the following weekend.

And with Italian football accustomed to taking a winter break over the festive period, Pioli is curious to see whether more spectators will come in through the turnstiles.

“I am very curious to see how it goes,” the Fiorentina Coach told reporters ahead of today’s match with Genoa. “Although I’m not convinced about the Coppa Italia matches.

“I don’t know whether there will be a lot of fans at the stadium for that.

“I am happy about the fact we are playing during the holidays. We are behind other European Leagues in terms of doing that.

“If this idea brings more people to watch, we will all be happy.”

Pioli added that one of the people to benefit from the festive fixtures would be his own wife.

“On the 25th, everyone will train and the players are happy to work on that day and play over Christmas.

“Mrs Pioli is also happy because at least she won’t have to be by the ovens!”

Going into today’s match against the Griffone, Fiorentina are tenth in Serie A, having gone unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions.

“One of our targets is to bring enthusiasm back into the team.

“We are happy if our work is helping to build enthusiasm but we haven’t achieved anything yet.

“The team is very concentrated. We need to take our supporters’ energy and translate it onto the pitch in what will be a very difficult match.

“We want to keep our heads down and push hard.”
