The Viola benefited from a Lorenzo De Silvestri howler in the opening 120 seconds, but Toro equalised when Ola Aina’s shot rebounded in off the back of goalkeeper Alban Lafont after hitting the post.

“We brought home a good result, considering we didn’t play well, and that is nothing to be sniffed at,” said Pioli in his Press conference.

“In the second half we actually played better and had the best scoring opportunities. We struggled with their pressing and didn’t move enough off the ball.

“We can and must work on many situations, but the psychological approach from my players was excellent and a real sign of progress. We suffered for the result and that is important.

“I wish we converted more of our chances and have to improve the final ball too. It was tough against a physically strong opponent, but we never let go.”

Fiorentina surprisingly started with Kevin Mirallas and Valentin Eysseric, leaving Simeone on the bench.

“I was not satisfied with his recent performances and there were other players who had impressed me more during the week.”
