The Diavolo dominated Italian football in 2020 and finish the year at the top of the standings, one point above rivals Inter.

But even if the Rossoneri are leading the Scudetto battle, Pioli stressed his main target is to bring Milan back to the Champions League.

“We’ll work to improve. And, yes, return to the Champions League,” Pioli told Corriere della Sera. “The club hasn’t asked for anything, they don’t want to pressure us.

“Maldini, Massara and Gazidis have put us in ideal working conditions: they’re extraordinary. But we are all aware we must do everything to bring Milan back to where it should be, in the Champions League.

“It’s been missing for too long, that’s our place and we can do it.”

Pioli said Milan have found ‘enthusiasm’ in a great year and praised the example set by January signings Simon Kjaer and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“There’s enthusiasm now, there’s seriousness and compactness,” he added. “There’s no longer a need to hang the table on the wall, everyone knows what to do.

“The group is strong, united and proud. Those who arrived last January, Ibrahimovic and Kjaer, set an example and that helped us turn things around."
