Stefano Pioli warns Lionel Messi is “a dangerous dream” for Inter, who are “not afraid” of Friday’s Serie A opponents Napoli.

Inter legend Luisito Suarez has been on record this week as suggesting that Inter had agreed to sign Barcelona superstar Messi a decade ago, when he was working as an advisor to the club, but Pioli refused to be drawn to the rumour.

“Meeting with Zhang Jindong and Erick Thohir? It was a very positive one,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“Zhang and Thohir are giving me great support, showing grit and determination and have great ambitions of bringing Inter back to past glories and the summits in Italian and world football.

“The team have character, but we need to have more confidence in what we do.

“We’re looking for a balance that allows us to stay in the game, even when we go behind on the scoreboard.

“We must remain lucid, we’re not afraid of our opponents. We’re not in a hopeless situation in the table, but we must work to recover points while staying focused on the day-to-day.

“January? Three weeks of work isn’t enough for me to make final evaluations.

“Shortly, however, I’ll have another meeting with the club to see what we’ll do.

“Messi? Dreaming is beautiful, but it can be dangerous. We don’t have time [to dream about Messi] and need to think about reality.

“Gabigol? He’s young, he has quality and is learning Italian football.

“Icardi? He’s a great professional, one of the best strikers in the world yet still has room for improvement, given his age.

“Napoli? They’re a team that have their own identity, but we know how to face them.

“It’s not a decisive match for either team, neither is it the last train for the Champions League, but we’re going there to win.”
