Stefano Pioli says ‘the blame is shared’ for Fiorentina’s embarrassing home defeat to Verona today.

The Viola were on the receiving end of a 4-1 thrashing by Fabio Pecchia’s team, who are second-from-bottom of the Serie A table and spent the last week ‘in ritiro’ amid speculation over the Coach’s future.

“The blame for the defeat today is shared, from me personally to the players,” Pioli admitted after witnessing his side’s eighth defeat of the season.

“It’s a defeat that hurts, we played very badly without the spirit and sacrifice that usually distinguishes us.

“The break damaged us but now we need to do well and give a confident response on the pitch.”

The former Inter and Lazio boss apologised to fans, who were left furious by their team’s performance and protested outside the Artemio Franchi for an hour after the final whistle.

“The performances up until now have been different. I wasn’t expecting a match like that, but we have time to show something else.

“I am the first to be disappointed, so I should be the first to say sorry to the fans – but it’s pointless now.

“It seems like all our work has been thrown away, but that isn’t the case. The team and club can’t throw away all the good done after one really bad defeat.”

An emergency meeting was held in the Viola dressing room following the conclusion of the match this afternoon.

“People from the club were there, the players, Corvino. We tried to understand the performance and we held the players to account.

“To get out of this, the only way is to work.”
