Petkovic, 50, is well known to the Swiss FA given his spells in charge of clubs such as Bellinzona, Lugano, Young Boys and Sion.
The Bosnian was an instant hit at Lazio following his arrival in 2012, but there have been questions about his future after a difficult second half of 2012-13 and an inconsistent 2013-14 so far.
Jurgen Klinsmann, Roberto Di Matteo and Pierluigi Tami are also being touted as contenders to succeed Hitzfeld.
