Someone has started a petition asking for the 2019-20 Serie A title to be handed to Atalanta, as the city of Bergamo has been hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

There are now 15,362 deaths registered in Italy from the virus, with 8,656 of them being in the Lombardy region.

Bergamo is a small town of around 120,000 people, so it is particularly shocking to see over 4,500 die there over the last month.

The nation was shocked by scenes of a military convoy carrying coffins to other cities because their crematorium was unable to keep up with the rising number of fatalities.

Because of this, and Atalanta’s ability to reach the Champions League quarter-finals, someone has launched a petition on Change.org asking for La Dea to receive the 2019-20 Serie A title.

They were sitting in fourth place with a game in hand when play was suspended, having just eliminated Valencia in the Champions League.

The petition maintains the Scudetto to Atalanta “would be both for their sporting achievements over the last two years and to pay homage to the city of Bergamo, the symbol of Italy suffering due to the coronavirus.”

Juventus have already made clear they would not accept the Scudetto if it was assigned before finishing the season, even though they are currently top, one point ahead of Lazio.

Atalanta have never won the Serie A title and this was their first ever Champions League campaign.
