Diego Perotti admits his astonishing ‘rabona’ goal for Roma against Viktoria Plzen “was meant to be a cross.”

The Argentine was trying to chip the ball up to Mohamed Salah at the back post, but it looped over the goalkeeper into the far top corner.

“The truth is that was meant to be a cross, but then the goal arrived and it was useful to help the team kill off the game,” Perotti told Sky Sport Italia after the 4-1 Europa League victory.

“The truth is that was meant to be a cross, but then the goal arrived and it was useful to help the team kill off the game,” Perotti told Sky Sport Italia after the 4-1 Europa League victory.

“It was important for me too, seeing as so far this season I had only scored from the penalty spot.

“We know that we have a great squad and all those who come off the bench do well too. We all have to be concentrated and give it 100 per cent.

“Today we proved that when we give it our all, it’s tough to beat this Roma. We must always play like this.”

Do Roma consider themselves contenders to win the Europa League?

“All the competitions Roma play in must be targeted for the victory. I know what the team thinks and we want to win in the Europa League, Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

“I think we have the team to achieve that, but we need to prove it on the pitch, not with words. We want to win it all.”
