Former Napoli forward Manolo Gabbiadini said goodbye to Napoli fans with a parting shot at his critics, pointing to his overall goalscoring record.

The 25-year-old signed for Southampton on Tuesday, and also took the opportunity to thank those who had supported him.

"Now yes, after two years is really the time to say goodbye," Gabbiadini wrote on his Facebook page.

"In England I am ready and excited to start a new adventure; there are many thoughts that invade my mind and heart, and to put them in order in a few lines is not easy.

"Thank you Napoli. Thanks to the President, to the Company, [Rafael] Benitez, [Riccardo] Bigon, [Cristiano] Guintoli, to all staff members and teammates during these 25 months of living together in Italy and Europe.

"Thanks to the Neapolitan fans, who are unique and wonderful, and for the many messages you are sending me on social media. I promise I'll try to read them all.

"Thank you for always making me and my family feel at home and for having given your heart.

"I’m happy and proud to have been loved for who I really am inside and off the field and not how others wanted me to be, exuberant, smiling through necessity. For better or for worse I have always been myself.

"I enjoyed the way you support me and encourage me so much, both in good times and in those less happy times, and I will never forget your reception at the airport.

"I want to dedicate one final thought to those who have often criticised me and willingly labelled me as a football player with little personality and charisma, unable to withstand the pressures of the large stage at a big club.

"Well, what to say, I do not want to answer in words, but I prefer to talk about the numbers.

"In football, numbers are everything and capture the facts, in a Napoli shirt I scored 25 goals in 3119 minutes, a goal every 124 minutes.

"Ciao Napoli, it’s been beautiful.

"A hug from Manolo."
