“It’s going to be a truly intense game, open to any result and no doubt we’ll have to work hard,” he told the Corriere dello Sport.

“The derby two years ago was a showdown for second place, but here it comes too early into the season to be that decisive. It remains a fundamental test and it’d be great to leapfrog Roma in the standings.

“We will give it everything we’ve got, playing with the same spirit we’ve had throughout the season, helping each other out and keeping up the tempo.

“Roma are a team built to win the Scudetto, whereas we’ve proved that we can compete for European qualification. Now there are four big games coming up that will tell us if we can truly become great.

“Nobody expected us to have such a strong start to the campaign. Our secret is those who come off the bench make a strong impact, as we all feel part of the project.

“With these foundations, you could say we are opening up a new era. I say we’re at the very dawn of it, that something is starting at Lazio, but we must keep our feet on the ground.”

Lazio are technically the ‘home’ side today, but have another advantage too, as their ultras have decided to suspend the boycott of the Stadio Olimpico and will pack the Curva Nord.

Roma supporters, on the other hand, continue their protest against barriers and will leave the Curva Sud barren.

“I am happy that the fans are returning, because with 50,000 cheering you on, you’ve won before the ball is kicked. We missed that over the last year, but we’re feeling their enthusiasm and hope to be celebrating together at the Olimpico.

“We are only one point behind Roma, so we certainly won’t settle for a draw. We are in a position to say no, we just want to win.

“I think the derby decider will be Immobile. He is very passionate, his performances depend on an emotional reaction and I hope he’ll get to feel that experience of a derby goal.”
