Verona’s assistant coach Matteo Paro believes the Gialloblu paid a high price for a poor first half against Atalanta.

Verona suffered a 2-0 defeat against La Dea at the Stadio Bentegodi in the lunchtime match in Serie A.

Head coach Ivan Juric was serving a one-match ban.

“I think there were better than us. They won many challenges, we knew there would be many clashes and long balls, they were better than us, especially in the first half,” Paro told DAZN.

“We are sorry we conceded two goals on two tricky occasions. We were aware of Atalanta’s qualities and we could have done more in the first half, with more wickedness.

“We struggled in the first half. We had a confrontation during the break and we won more challenges in the second half.

Did Atalanta’s new system surprise him?

“I think Gasperini needed to change because he had a few players out of action. But even with the old system, the game wouldn’t have changed.

“Juric usually doesn’t talk to the players after a game, we’ll talk on Tuesday and we’ll analyse what we did.”
