Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez discussed his Atalanta future, working with Diego Simeone and waiting for an Italy call.

The Argentine was Atalanta’s top scorer this season with seven Serie A goals, but leaves the door open.

“I honestly don’t know where I’ll be playing next season,” Gomez told Tuttomercatoweb.

“I have a contract with Atalanta and we’ll see. I had a very good campaign, so a few offers will certainly arrive.

“I have a contract with Atalanta and we’ll see. I had a very good campaign, so a few offers will certainly arrive. We’ll see if these offers make both me and the club happy.

“If I am not called by a Champions League or Europa League side, then I won’t move.”

Atletico Madrid have been mentioned, as Gomez worked with Simeone at Catania.

“Before going to Metalist, I was close to Atletico Madrid. It’s a very important club, but I am happy in Italy and would need a really big call to leave here.

Milan? I read those rumours, but at this moment Milan don’t even have a Coach, so we don’t know what approach they’ll take.”

There are reports Atalanta are trying to bring in another ex-Catania figure, current Chievo Coach Rolando Maran.

“I’d be happy if he came, as I had my best year with him in Catania, scoring my personal best. He was an important Coach in my career.

“So was Simeone. After Catania he went to Racing, but the Italian experience really helped to change him on a tactical level. When he started out he was very attack-minded, but now is more balanced.

“People say Atletico are boring? That’s not true, he has players with certain characteristics, so it’s not as if they could play like Barcelona.

“I am sure Cholo won’t get the Champions League Final wrong against Real Madrid tonight. I didn’t call him because I can imagine how tense he’ll be, but my agent is his best friend, so I am keeping in touch.”

Gomez gained Italian citizenship a few weeks ago, meaning he is eligible to play for the Azzurri.

“Next season I want the Nazionale. I don’t know if I’ll be playing for Atalanta or elsewhere, but my aim is to impress and earn the Azzurri jersey.”
