Sampdoria have yet to make a decision on whether to keep or sell captain Angelo Palombo after relegation.
The fans are desperate for the player to remain ahead of their Serie B campaign, but Doria say no concrete decision has been made.
"Palombo's salary is certainly a luxury for the Second Division," new sporting director Pasquale Sensibile stated.
"We'll also have to see how motivated he is to remain as this too could be a decisive factor."

The Italian international is the club's top earner after the outfit sold Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini in January.
Inter, Napoli and Fiorentina have all been associated with making a bid for the central midfielder.
Doria could accept a fee of around €8m for the player who nets €1.5m a campaign in wages.
An eventual Palombo sale would not be taken well by the club's supporters.
Only yesterday fans left a message on one of the walls at the training ground which read: "Palombo is not to be touched."
