Italian senator Maurizio Gasparri has criticised Roma President James Pallotta, who is at war with the club’s fans.

After a section of the Giallorossi support displayed a banner insulting the mother of murdered Napoli fans Ciro Esposito, the President called them ‘idiots’.

That led to a furious response, with Ultras turning up at Stadio Olimpico on Sunday to protest the regime.

“Pallotta is an American, but they don’t have that surname in the US,” Gasparri raged in an interview with Radio 24.

“He’s as American as [Italian actor] Alberto Sordi. I’m against violence, and of course the banner is wrong.

“However, he’s done what you should never, ever do and had a fight with the fans. He’s an absent President.

“Not all of the fans in the Curva [Sud] are idiots like he said, and if he came to the stadium he would understand who put the banner up.

“Instead we have a President in absentia, who bought [Victor] Ibarbo and [Seydou] Doumbia. Maybe he can take them back to America with him…”
